PIMS is a tool for sharing critical information to satisfy international obligations –
particularly the International Phytosanitary Portal of the IPPC.
The web-based
database has information to assist countries access
reliable information on pests and reduce intra-regional trade barriers. Target users of PIMS
include the general public, private sector, farmers, academia, traders and trading
partners/countries among others.
The World Trade Organization (WTO) Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA) and the
WTO Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Agreement call for member country trade regulations to be
clearly published. Measures to ensure food safety and to protect
the health of animals and plants should be based as far as possible on the analysis and
assessment of objective and accurate scientific data.
